Bjørn West was the codename for the biggest military resistance group operating in western Norway. They were formed in the Matre Mountains in Autumn 1944 with Captain Harald Risnes in command, and by the end of the war Bjørn West had 259 men operating in the area.
In a particulary heavy battle in April/May 1945 the group was attacked by a force of over 800 German soldiers. The week long conflict ended with over 100 Germans and 6 Norwegians killed.
The lifeline to Bjørn West and other resistance groups was the regular supply drops carried out by the RAF and USAAF special operations squadrons. By the end of the war, these squadrons had carried out over 700 succesful supply drops over Norway, one of which is represented here in this painting of an RAF Halifax.
